Old Industrial Town Surrounded by Mountains

Chichibu is one of the perfect spots for a day trip away from central Tokyo. This region once flourished as a trading town in the mid-20th century for silk farming and cement production of Mount Buko. Strolling down the town’s shopping street, you can enjoy the local street food and feel the retro atmosphere. You will visit the famous Shinto shrine in town, the Chichibu Shrine, and also visit one of the 34 Chichibu Fudasho temples on the idyllic pilgrimage routes. Or you can choose to take another course: a boat trip. Though an exception in the winter, it will take you through the picturesque Nagatoro River to the Iwadatami Rocks, designated as a natural monument. If you wish, it is possible to go hiking on Mount Hodo as well.
