UENO & YANAKA

Museums and Temples with an Atmosphere of Old Tokyo

Ueno is located on the east side of Tokyo and is home to the first public park built in Japan: Ueno Park. The Park has six museums and many historic structures. Few examples are the National Museum of Western Art, designed by Le Corbusier; the Ueno Toshogu Shrine, dedicated to the memory of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542 – 1616), the founder of Tokugawa Shogunate; and many more.

About a 15-minute walk from Ueno Park is the Yanaka district. This area has miraculously survived the catastrophe due to the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and the Tokyo Raid in 1945. Stroll through these narrow streets where you can enjoy the good old-fashioned Tokyo vibe and find many temples, stores, coffee shops, and restaurants. The closest train station to visit the Yanaka area is called Nippori. On the other side of the station, on the opposite side of the Yanaka area, is the famous “Nippori textile town.”
