ASAKUSA & KAPPABASHI

An Old Temple Town and a Paradise of Kitchenware

Asakusa, located in the east part of the Sumida River, is the center of Tokyo’s “Shitamachi” -a lowland area where the commoners lived during the Edo period. The main attraction is Sensoji Temple, the oldest temple in Tokyo. You can learn the know-hows and experience praying at the temple, as well as at the shrine. You can also pick an Omikuji, a fortune-telling slip, during your stay. There is a lot of religious architecture on the premises, which resembles a religious complex.

The main street to Sensoji Temple is called Nakamise. On this street, there are about 90 stores where you can enjoy traditional handicrafts and tasty snacks. For art lovers, you can visit an ukiyoe gallery or a Japanese greeting card shop there. If you love cooking, a recommendation is to visit the Kappabashi neighborhood. The area has about 170 stores selling dishes, kitchen tools, and plastic food samples!
